The Only Way to Tell Whigs from Tories Was by What They Wore on Their Hats
At the Battle of Ramsour’s Mill in June 1780, which took place just a short distance from what is now Cleveland County, the opposing forces had no uniforms of any kind. According to Mamie Jones, the only way soldiers could tell who was on which side was by what they pinned to their hats. The Whigs wore pieces of white paper, while the Tories wore green twigs. In the middle of the fighting, neighbor was literally fighting neighbor, and brother against brother, with nothing but scraps of paper and bits of greenery to distinguish friend from enemy.
