The First Court in Tryon County Was Held in a Man’s House
When Tryon County was first created in 1769, there was no courthouse at all. The very first Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions was held at the home of Charles McGan in what is now Gaston County. Even later, when the county decided to build a courthouse and jail, they never actually got built, so the courts continued to meet in private homes. For a time, official county business was conducted at the home of Christian Mauney, about nine miles from present-day Lincolnton. In the earliest days, justice in this region literally took place in people’s living rooms.
