Schoolboys Once Moved Wagons, Gates, and Buildings Overnight
In 1870, at the old Dr. Turner Boarding School for Boys—then called the old Ross Building—students were known for elaborate nighttime pranks. According to recollections Mamie Jones quoted from Harry Fulenwider, boys would change gates, signs, and even small houses, moving them to the wrong places. On some nights, wagons and buggies were hauled up and placed on top of a man’s barn. These pranks became well known and were remembered as some of the most amusing—and disruptive—acts of schoolboy mischief in early Shelby.
