Indians Knew About Cleveland Springs Long Before Settlers Did
Long before white settlers discovered and promoted Cleveland Springs for its supposed healing properties, the local Indians already knew about the sulphur waters. Mamie Jones notes that an Indian trail ran along Muddy Fork Creek, passed directly by Cleveland Springs, and continued on toward Flat Rock and Broad River. The Indians were well aware of the value of the sulphur water and used the area as part of their regular travel routes. What later became a famous local health resort was first known and used by Native Americans centuries earlier.
