The First Cleveland County Court Was Held in a Man’s Living Room
When Cleveland County was officially formed in 1841, there was no courthouse, no public building, and no town yet. The very first meeting of the Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions was held at the home of William Weathers. In fact, several early court sessions took place in private homes because no courthouse had been built. Even the county’s first term of Superior Court was held at Weathers’ house. For the first years of its existence, Cleveland County government literally operated out of people’s living rooms.
