Early Inns Had Government-Set Prices for Food, Beds, and Whiskey

Because court sessions brought in a lot of visitors, inns (“Ordinarys”) were built to house and feed people attending court, and prices weren’t left up to the owner. The Ordinarys were allowed to charge four pence for lodging in a good feather bed with clean sheets per night; three pence for breakfast and three pence for supper; one shilling for dinner (which had to include at least two good meat dishes); four pence for a quart of beer; and six pence per quart for brandy or whiskey toddy.
