Catawba deerskin map
The Catawba Deerskin Map, drawn around 1721 and presented to South Carolina royal governor Francis Nicholson. This is the British Library copy (Additional MS 4723). The map shows 13 Native American groups as circles connected by paths representing trade routes and political relationships. Charleston is on the left with a ship in harbor, Virginia is on the lower right. The largest circle at center is Nafaw, the principal Catawba town. To view it with standard compass directions, rotate the map so Charleston is at the bottom.
