Following Is a partial list of the soldiers from Cleveland county who served In the war of 1812: Thomas Wilkins, Jr., William Humphries, and Newton Wright. It may be of Interest to state that Newton Wright had seven sons In the Civil war. Cherokee War, 1838 David Beam and John Harrlll served In the Cherokee war, 1838. Mexican War, 184? Thomas F. Elliott, Benjamin Jus-\ tlce, David M. C. Nowlin, Thomas 1 D. Nowlin and Samuel P. Weathers of Cleveland county were soldiers In the Mexican war, 1848. Civil War, 1861-1865 Cleveland county furnished 14 companies, 28 captains, two majors, one colonel and more than 2,035 troops to the Confederacy. Elswhere in this issue is given a list of com panies, captains, officers and num ber of men which Cleveland county furnished to the Confederacy. It will suffice to state that while the census of 1860 gave Cleveland coun ty a total population of 12,384, the county furnished more than 2,035 soldiers, one out of etrery six. And out of a population whose military quota was 115,388, North Carolina sent 127,000 troops, one-fifth .of the Confederate army, all of whom she fed, clothed and equipped. Her losses by death in battle, from wounds and disease surpassed that of any other state, totalling 40,305. Spanish American War, 18998 Cleveland county furnished more than 100 men in the Spanish Amer ican war. Most of these men served in company G, First North Caro lina volunteers. The officers were Capt. Petterson. Corporals; Alexander F. Tlddy, Rufus P. Rollins, William P. Gale, Edward E. Turner, Eliza C. Corfner, Benjamin G. Logan, Victor C. Eaker, Clarence T. Har din, Charles R. Little, Benjamin F. Dixon, John Riley Bruce. Musicians; Upton 8. Alexander, Albert B. Homesley. Artificer: Thomas O. Ferguson. Dagoner; Harry J. Sullivan.
