The Over The Mountain Soldier Who Stayed In Cleveland County

The Over-the-Mountain Soldier Who Stayed in Cleveland County

Captain John Lattimore was one of the “Over-the-Mountain Men” from Tennessee who joined Colonel Isaac Shelby in pursuing the British officer Ferguson before the Battle of Kings Mountain in 1780. Lattimore was wounded during the battle and was taken to the home of another soldier to recover. Instead of returning to Tennessee after he healed, he remained in the area and settled in the community. According to Mamie Jones, he became the ancestor of the Lattimore family in Cleveland County and is buried at Polkville, making his wartime injury the reason an entire local family line began there.
