The Battle That Lasted Only 50 Minutes Changed The War

The Battle That Lasted Only 50 Minutes Changed the War

The Battle of Cowpens, fought just over the line in South Carolina on January 17, 1781, lasted only about fifty minutes, but it became one of the most important victories of the American Revolution in the South. According to Mamie Jones, British forces under Colonel Tarleton were decisively defeated by the colonial army led by General Daniel Morgan. The battle took place so close to Cleveland County that many local men likely took part, though exact records were never kept. Despite its short length, Cowpens helped cripple British momentum in the region and set the stage for later American victories.
