How Space Was Used in Early Town Buildings

Jones wrote that space in early Shelby was used efficiently and informally. A single building might serve as a store, office, meeting place, and lodging. Rooms above stores were rented or loaned out for law offices, clubs, or temporary housing. This mixing of uses was normal and expected in early town life.
