An Indignant Jailer Offered $25 For Three Escapees And The Jail’s Blankets

An Indignant Jailer Offered $25 for Three Escapees and the Jail’s Blankets

Mamie Jones found an item in the Mountain Eagle (Vol. II, No. 29, dated February 20, 1863) about Martin Roberts, jailer, who was angry because three prisoners—Wm. Cody, Joseph Carpenter, and Wm. Carpenter—had picked the jail locks and escaped. She wrote that they also took seven jail blankets and two jail locks with them. Roberts advertised a $25.00 reward if the prisoners were returned to jail before the 2nd Monday in March, 1863.
