A Country Doctor Delivered Five Babies in Four Days
During the years when Dr. T. Evans McBrayer was practicing medicine in Cleveland County, the work of a country doctor was exhausting and unrelenting. Mamie Jones told of one period when Dr. McBrayer delivered five babies within four days. These births were not close together, but were scattered across widely separated sections of the county. He traveled continuously, day and night, going from one home to another over rough roads, with little rest between calls. The episode was recalled to show how demanding medical practice was at the time, when doctors were expected to be available at all hours and travel long distances to serve their patients.
