“Fresh Fish And Oysters!” Could Be Heard Two Blocks Away

“Fresh Fish and Oysters!” Could Be Heard Two Blocks Away

In Shelby, beside the doorway that led upstairs to rooms later used as law offices by Senator Hoey and Joe Whisnant, stood a series of businesses over the years, including Worth Little’s saloon, J. J. McMurry & Co. General Store, and later L. J. Pope’s grocery. Mamie Jones says no one who lived then could forget Lonnie Pope’s voice. Every Saturday he stood outside crying his goods: “Fresh Fish and Oysters! Fresh Fish and Oysters!” His call was so loud and constant that it could be heard two blocks away.
